M.F.L. (Modern Foreign Languages) Curriculum Intent

To enable students to communicate with speakers of Spanish and French on topics which are within their experiences, both in speech and in writing.  The curriculum also intends to develop students’ appreciation of a different way of thinking through exposure to authentic materials.  The MFL curriculum aims to increase students’ confidence in using the language being taught across the four skills needed in order to express both thoughts and ideas on a variety of themes.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all students:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Here at Cockburn our students have the opportunity to study either French or Spanish. Our language students are well motivated individuals who enjoy speaking in the target language and participating in challenging and engaging lessons.
