Art Curriculum Intent

The purpose of the art curriculum is for students to produce creative work, explore their ideas and record their experiences, to generate their own original and independent ideas. For students not only to become proficient at drawing, painting and sculpture but all forms of art, craft and design such as textiles, photography, screen printing, product design and mixed media work. We aim for students to be confident at evaluating and analysing creative works using the language of art, craft and design, they will be able to purposefully refine and improve their work. We will encourage students to produce creative work which explores, records and reflects on ideas and experiences in their own and others’ lives, they will know about a range of artists, craft makers and designers and understand historical and cultural development of their Art forms. We inspire for all students to achieve well and to prepare students for future study and realise the relevance of Art Craft and Design in our modern culture whilst raising awareness of career choices and engendering a love of the subject. We aim to encourage open minded, creative, critical reflective thinkers who have the courage and confidence to discover and contribute to the world around them.

This is a well-established and successful department, which places a heavy emphasis on establishing good, friendly, supportive relations with students of all ages and abilities who pass through the department.  Our aim is to provide a stimulating, secure and professional learning environment through which students gain and extend experiences and artistic competencies, are able to express themselves, take creative risks, develop confidence and a sense of achievement that will enable them to contribute positively to the world around them.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
